Sometimes, I just feel like getting on my soap box, and looks like today is going to be one of those days. Truth be told, unless you're one of my very close friends on here, then you probably have no idea what makes me tick.
I hate almost all of current pop culture with a passion. I believe that this generation is an embarrassment to itself, yet too ignorant to even realize it...
1. Technology has truly outdone itself. People don't even need 75% of what technology has to offer. Instead of worrying about the latest iPhone app, why not think about how technological advancements could put forth more effort in finding cures for AIDS and Cancer? At some point, in some way, Cancer is going to have a greater impact on your life than your phone will...and yes, I'm one of those people who agree that too much reliance on technology can diminish a person's conversation skills. It's not necessarily a guarantee, but I've seen it happen.
I can't stand talking to people who don't know how to have a conversation.
2. I usually couldn't give a damn less amount what's on TV, or in the media in general. Unfortunately, it's usually reality shows...which I definitely don't care about. There's nothing "real" about them! I live in reality, thank you very much. I guess Andy Warhol was right when he said, "In the future everyone will be world famous for 15 minutes." That's where the phrase "15 minutes of fame" was coined. However, not everyone needs to be famous, and some people have gone into overtime. Either way, if people could unglue themselves from the TV and get some fresh air it would be very beneficial to them.
I also feel the same way about video games. In fact, I'd consider my feelings on video games to be a mixture of those on technology and TV. Which brings me to the internet...
3. While the internet is an awesome, informative tool, it also contains a lot of useless, frivolous data. It’s like the new age of television...junk food for the brain. I like the internet to an extent, but I don’t live on it. I don’t need to, I have a real life. It’s quite pathetic to see those who do. Don’t they have any real hobbies? What about a job?
Still, everything I’ve mentioned thus far can be harmless in moderation.
As for those who claim they have kids, I think it speaks volumes as to what kind of parent they are when they care more about the drama circulating on VR, or even worse creating it, than tending to their children.
Back to less ominous things, yet still things that make me tick.
4. What the hell is going on with “music” today? First off, rap is not music. Furthermore, I don’t consider anything without real vocals and/or other instruments music. Thus, I don’t consider a lot of today’s “music” to be music.
I don’t appreciate the studio equipment that is implemented solely to mask the talentless musicians’ fuck ups, nor the overuse of special effects. Some special effects are fine, as long as it doesn’t subtract from the music itself.
I’ve read interviews where newer artists have basically admitted they don’t really know how to play their instruments. Really? Yet their devoted fans still blindly follow them. Stupid. There’s a reason why live shows are often louder and faster than studio recordings these days. It’s to hide their flaws.
Sadly, overall I think good, real music died at the end of the 20th century. Perhaps with the exception of one or two, there haven’t been any musicians to emerge since then that have truly captured my attention.
Just yesterday, I was talking to one of my closest friends on here of how I think Third Eye Blind is one of the most underrated bands. I’m probably somewhat biased, but I consider the lyrics to be one of the most important elements in music.
5. Dyeing your hair an unnatural color, unconventional haircuts, body modification, and so forth does not in itself make you unique or an individual; it makes you look like a trendy, brainwashed sheep wearing a uniform. True individuality comes from within…you either have it or you don’t.
Yeah, there was a point in my life when I bought into that “uniform” way of thinking, but the older I grew and the more life experiences I had, the more I realized I didn’t need to, because I was already naturally a nonconformist in a way that it was almost ingrained in me at birth. My tattoos are of course permanent, but I wear my hair naturally now, and only have one facial piercing these days that I take out or leave in whenever I feel like it.
I hold these truths to be self-evident that you can judge one’s character by what they do when no one is around, and by the company they keep.
